Vancouver ist wie der Pazifik: groß, rau und kalt. Es ist eine Stadt der Gegensätze wo arm und reich gleich Tür an Tür nebeneinander wohnen.
Auf der Erkundungstour muss ein Besuch in Greenville Island eingeplant werden. Dort ist eine Markthalle vorhanden in welcher, wie auch in der umgebener Kleigastronomie, alles Schmackhafte, was das Meer und die Umgebung hergibt, verkauft, zubereitet und verspeist wird. Weiter nördlich in Downtown gibt es Hochhäuser, Pubs und viel abwechslungsreiche Kulinarik. Die Kalorien können anschließend im Stanley Park bei einer Radtour verbraucht werden.
Und so neblig und verhangen sich die Harbourfront sich manchmal zeigt, umso schöner ist Vancouver dann bei Nacht anzusehen.

A visit to Greenville Island must be scheduled on the exploration tour. There is a market hall in which, as in the surrounding gastronomy, everything tasty that the sea and the surrounding area gives, sells, prepares and eats. Further north in downtown there are high-rise buildings, pubs and a wide variety of cuisine. After that you can burn all the calories on a bike tour in the Stanley Park.
And as foggy and overcast the Harbourfront sometimes shows itself, the more beautiful Vancouver can be seen at night.

Der schönste Campground überhaupt befindet sich mitten im Pacific Rim Nationalpark, welcher auch außerhalb der Saison (fast) bis auf den letzten Platz ausgebucht ist. Ohne Vorreservierung muss man viel Glück mitbringen. Man campt inmitten eines dichten Urwaldes und nur wenige Minuten zu Fuß entfernt vom Pazifik. Es ist ein unbezahlbares Erlebnis, kilometerweit am wilden Naturstrand entlang spazieren zu dürfen und hierbei nur einer Handvoll Menschen zu begegnen. Bei Ebbe kann man freigelegte Korallenriffe beobachten. Aufpassen: innerhalb von einer Stunde kann die Sonne vom dichten Nebel mit einer Sicht von wenigen Meter verhüllt werden. Scheint die Sonne, dann gehört der Sonnenuntergang hier zu den Schönsten überhaupt. Nur fürs Baden (zumindest ohne Neoprenanzug) ist das Meer mit maximal 10 Grad doch zu kalt.
In der Surfer Hochburgen Tofino und Ucluelet (oder wie es die Einheimischen schlicht „Ukee“ nennen) gehört das whale watching zum absoluten Pflichtprogramm. Die Tour in einem Zodiac Motorboot (Dank Jamie’s whalewatching in „Ukee“) ließ mir einen Blick auf Wale, Delphine, Adler, Otter und Seelöwen gewähren. Und bin mir sicher, dass einer der dort gesehenen Wale mich aus der Ferne verabschiedete, als ich traurig auf der Fähre die Insel verlassen haben…

The most beautiful campground is located in the middle of the Pacific Rim National Park, which is (almost) fully booked out of season to the last place. You need to bring good luck without a reservation. You camp in the middle of a dense jungle and only a few minutes walk from the Pacific. It is an invaluable experience to be able to walk for miles along the wild natural beach and to meet only a handful of people. At low tide you can see exposed coral reefs. Watch out: within an hour the sun can be covered by the thick fog with a view of a few meters. If the sun is shining, the sunset here is one of the most beautiful ever. Only for swimming (at least without a wetsuit) the sea is too cold with a maximum of 10 degrees.
In the surf-strongholds of Tofino and Ucluelet (or as the locals simply call it „Ukee“) whale watching is an absolute must. The tour in a Zodiac motorboat (thanks to Jamie’s whalewatching in „Ukee“) gave me a view of whales, dolphins, eagles, otters and sea lions. And I am sure that one of the whales seen there said farewell to me from afar when I sadly left the island on the ferry…
